The Zcash Sprout freeze is a key change planned for the NU7 upgrade, targeted for November 5, 2026, at block height 3,543,405. Under ZIP 2003, version 4 transactions will no longer be accepted after activation, leaving any ZEC still held in the Sprout pool unspendable through the current protocol. Your private key may remain valid, but that alone will not let you move the funds.

Move first, swap second. The steps are below.
The short version
- NU7 is targeted at block 3,543,405, around Nov 5, 2026.
- Sprout holds about 22,309 ZEC (as of Oct 17, per CryptoSlate).
- The coins are not burned, but no restore path is scheduled.
- Sapling and transparent balances are unaffected.

What actually breaks? | Zcash Sprout Freeze 2026
Sprout spends are JoinSplit-based, and a JoinSplit can only be carried in a version 4 transaction. Version 5 (introduced with NU5) and version 6 have no slot for it. ZIP 2003 makes NU7 reject every v4 transaction at consensus level.
That rule also catches transparent-only and Sapling transactions that happen to use v4, but those can simply be rebuilt as v5 or v6. Sprout can’t. Your spending key stays cryptographically valid, yet there is no transaction container the network will accept for using it. Re-signing an old v4 transaction doesn’t help either, since the format itself is what gets rejected.
The proposal keeps the Sprout balance in issued supply and leaves a theoretical door open to re-enabling v4 or adding a separate retrieval mechanism later. It also says plainly that spending may never be restored. Treat that as a possibility and not a plan.
Why Zcash is removing it?
ZIP 2003’s argument is about maintenance and attack surface. Sprout needs its own verification path and its own handling of private notes and nullifiers (the spent-note identifiers) in live transaction acceptance, even though almost nobody uses it. That adds work to every validating implementation, and verification cost matters for denial-of-service exposure when processing pending transactions and blocks.
Some risk is already contained. Sprout shares cryptographic components with Sapling, and pool accounting checks limit how far a balance violation could go. ZIP 2003 argues the leftover complexity still isn’t worth carrying. ZIP 211 had already stopped new value from entering Sprout while allowing withdrawals. NU7 is the second step: closing the exit.
How activation works
Zcash upgrades activate at a specific block height, so the calendar date is an estimate that moves with block production. Operators need Zebra 7.0.0 (released Oct 22) before that height. Software that isn’t upgraded may stay online and keep following pre-NU7 rules, which is why your wallet’s node connection matters. NU7 also cuts the target block time from 75 to 25 seconds, but that doesn’t change anything for your Sprout coins.
Check your wallet
Sprout was the first shielded pool, launched in 2016, and new deposits stopped years ago. Look for any of these:
- An old wallet.dat from zcashd, or a full old data directory
- A z_exportwallet backup
- An exported Sprout spending key
- Addresses starting with zc
One wallet can contain Sprout and transparent ZEC together. Only the Sprout part is affected.
What to do now to protect your ZCASH
- Back up first. Copy your old wallet files before you touch anything. Keep the original wallet.dat unchanged.
- Don’t count on a wallet migration. Zallet’s migration documentation excludes Sprout keys and funds. Importing your old wallet there will not move those coins.
- Choose a recovery route. The Argos tool documents a path for legacy wallet files and standalone Sprout keys. The difference comes down to what the spend needs. To build a valid spend, you need the note data plus a witness, the Merkle path proving the note exists in the commitment tree.
A wallet that already holds usable note data and a cached witness can skip a historical scan. With only a key, the data has to be reconstructed. Argos estimates roughly 280 GB of transfer and possibly days of processing. If you’re in that second group, starting this week matters. - Know where the funds land. Argos sweeps Sprout funds into Sapling, even if you supply a Unified Address. Moving them onward is a separate step.
- Verify. Wait for confirmations and check the balance in a wallet you control.
- Swap. With spendable ZEC:
1. Choose ZEC as the asset you’re sending and pick what you want to receive.
2. Paste the receiving address and check its first and last characters.
3. Enter the amount and review the quote.
4. Send ZEC to the deposit address shown.
5. Track the swap until it lands.

The privacy cost of leaving Sprout
Moving value out of Sprout passes through public pool accounting, so the amount becomes visible on-chain. ZIP 308 describes a migration design meant to soften this: it coordinates timing and randomizes amounts so individual transactions are harder to link. ZIP 2003 warns that a short or badly coordinated exit window can make distinctive amounts and timing easier to tie to a holder.
So the exit isn’t free, and it gets harder to do carefully as the deadline nears. Weigh it against a balance that can’t move at all. That choice is yours.

FAQ
1. When does the Zcash Sprout freeze happen?
NU7 is targeted for November 5, 2026, at block 3,543,405. Because activation depends on block height, the exact time shifts slightly.
2. Will NU7 freeze all my ZEC?
No. Only Sprout-pool ZEC is affected. Sapling and transparent balances keep working.
3. Can I recover Sprout ZEC after the upgrade?
Possibly, but nothing is scheduled. ZIP 2003 leaves the balance in supply and allows a later fix in theory, while warning that spending may never return. Move funds before activation.
4. What happens to my ZEC if I miss the NU7 deadline?
The funds are not burned, and the spending keys remain valid, but the network will not accept any transaction containers for moving them.
5. Does the Zebra 7.0.0 update automatically migrate my Sprout funds?
No, there is no automatic migration; in fact, the Zallet application documentation explicitly excludes Sprout keys and balances from the migration process.
